Arranging an Area Rug

If you are in the market for an area rug and want it to ideally highlight your décor, you will need to think about more than the materials, color and style.  You will also need to take shape and size into consideration.

Typically, a good rule of thumb is to allow for there to be 18 inches of bare floor space around the edges of the rug.  That being said, the location and size of the room also play a part in this.  The rule just mentioned is best used in rooms that are separated or closed off from the areas surrounding it, while rooms that are smaller might look best with less of the floor exposed.

Remember that rugs that are too small can make the room it is in appear to be smaller as well as bringing an overall uncoordinated look to the room.

Before you go out and make that rug purchase, take a good look at the room it will be going in.  Think about the size of the furniture, where the doorways are and how much sun the room gets.

How large your living room is will tell you what the ideal shape and size of your area rug should be.  If you want a rug that has flamboyant and bold patterns, consider going with one that is small enough that all of the legs of the furniture will be off the rug and surrounding it.  For a bit larger rug, consider having it go underneath the front legs of the furniture.  For a larger and more ‘together’ look, go with an even larger rug and place all of the furniture (and all legs) on the rug.  This is great in large living rooms.

When you are selecting a rug for your dining room, ensure that it is large enough for all of the chairs at the table to fit comfortably on it…even when they are pulled back from the table.  This should roughly be about 24 inches from the table.  For smaller dining areas, use a smaller, rectangular rug.  Larger rugs with measurements of 8’x10’ or even 9’x12’ can typically be large enough for up to 8 chairs.  Round rugs work well with square tables.

The dimensions of your bed are important here.  If you have a full size bed, a rug that measures about 5’x8’ might be best and should be placed underneath the bed with the rug showing on the sides and the front of the bed.

For larger beds, go with larger area rugs, just remember to have the rug showing at the sides and the front of the bed.
